The Bible is not just a collection of ancient texts; it is the divinely inspired Word of God, offering wisdom, joy, and guidance for those seeking to live according to His will. In a world full of distractions, the Bible stands as a foundation of truth, providing not only knowledge but the power to live in holiness.
In a time when truth can seem uncertain, the Bible remains a constant source of divine wisdom and authority. It guides believers to a deeper understanding of God’s will and serves as a living source of joy, power, and direction. Understanding why we should study the Bible is essential for every believer who desires to align their life with God’s purpose.
The Bible Is True
The first reason to study the Bible is because it is true. Jesus states this in John 17:17, where He prays, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” The Bible is not simply a book of moral teachings or ancient history; it is the inspired Word of God, containing eternal truths that are relevant to every generation. In a world where the concept of truth is often questioned, the Bible stands firm as the ultimate standard.
The Scriptures reveal the character of God, His plan for salvation, and how we are to live in relationship with Him. When we understand that the Bible is true, we approach it not just as literature, but as a source of divine revelation. It is a reliable foundation for every aspect of life.
Truth Brings Us Joy
The Bible is not only true, but it also brings us joy. Psalm 19:8 says, “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.” There is a unique and lasting happiness found in living according to God’s Word. Unlike the fleeting pleasures the world offers, the joy that comes from following the Bible is deep and abiding.
Jesus speaks about this joy in John 15:11, saying, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” When we obey God’s Word, our hearts are filled with a joy that transcends circumstances. Even in times of sorrow, the Bible assures us that joy will come later (John 16:20). The joy found in following God’s Word is not just temporary happiness; it is a lasting, deep joy rooted in God’s truth.
In Luke 24, after Jesus’ resurrection, He walks with two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They do not recognize Him until He opens the Scriptures to them. Their response is, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). The truth of God’s Word stirred their hearts and brought them joy. When we study the Bible, our hearts and minds should burn within and give us joy. Part of having a relationship with God is to spend time in His Word and allow Him to speak to us.
The Bible Brings Knowledge and Power
The Bible is a source of deep knowledge. 1 Peter 2:2 urges believers to “like newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” The more we study and grow in God’s Word, the more we learn about His character, His ways, and His will for our lives. The Bible gives us the knowledge needed to understand how to live according to God’s purposes. So many times, you may have a conversation with a non-Christian or someone who claims to be a Christian who never reads the Bible and it is hard to have a conversation with them because they are so set in the world’s ways not understanding the truth. We must always be rooted in God’s Word and be prepared to give an answer for everything.
The Bible brings knowledge but it also brings power. Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as “living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.” The Bible is not a passive book; it is an active force in the life of a believer. It penetrates deep into our hearts, convicting us, transforming us, and empowering us to live in accordance with God’s will. The Bible is very much alive as we are dealing with the same issues and problems that man has been dealing with for thousands of years. The more we understand the Scriptures, the less we fear, because we know that we are secure in the promises of God.
The Bible Transforms Us
One of the most powerful reasons to study the Bible is its transformative effect. Romans 12:2 tells us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The process of studying the Bible leads to a complete renewal of how we think, act, and live. The Bible doesn’t just inform us; it shapes us into the image of Christ.
Ephesians 4:23 encourages believers to be “renewed in the spirit of your mind.” The more we study God’s Word, the more our thinking is aligned with His. As we encounter Scripture, we are convicted of sin, encouraged to grow in holiness, and strive to live righteous lives. The Bible humbles us, showing us where we fall short and pointing us to Jesus for forgiveness and transformation.
The Bible Provides Guidance
The Bible serves as our ultimate guide through life. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” In a world filled with confusion and darkness, the Bible illuminates the way forward. It provides clarity on how we should live, make decisions, and navigate life’s challenges.
The New Testament also emphasizes that the Holy Spirit works in conjunction with the Bible to guide believers. 1 John 2:22 teaches that the Holy Spirit helps us discern truth and guides us in following God’s will. We are not left to go through life on our own; God has provided His Word and His Spirit to direct us, ensuring that we walk in His will. Will we stumble and sin? Of course we will. We are human with a born-sinful nature; however, we should stumble and sin less. When we do sin, we should hate the sin and ask for forgiveness.
Commitment to Study and Obey the Bible
Studying the Bible requires commitment. Acts 17:11 describes the Bereans as “more noble” because they “received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” I love that term ‘searched the scriptures daily.” They not only read the Word, the searched and researched and grew more. The Bereans were diligent in their study of Scripture, and this is an example for us to follow. Studying the Bible is not something that happens automatically; it requires effort, discipline, and intentionality. Make it habit and it will happen and never feel like a chore to do. Remember, when you study God’s Word, it is an honor and privilege. The Bible is illegal in many parts of the world and most homes have several Bibles and we should always want to want to spend time with our Father in Heaven.
But it is not enough to study the Bible simply for knowledge’s sake. We are called to live out its teachings. James 1:22 reminds us, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” The purpose of studying the Bible is not just to gain information, but to allow it to change us and guide how we live. As we study, we are called to obey, applying God’s Word to our lives and reflecting His righteousness in our actions.
The Bible Helps Us Know Truth from Falsehood
In a world filled with deception and false teachings, the Bible is essential for discerning truth from error. In 1 John 2:5, we are encouraged to obey the Word of God, allowing it to control our lives and guide us into all truth. By grounding ourselves in Scripture, we are better equipped to identify and reject false teachings that can lead us astray.
In addition, it is essential to be Spirit-controlled when studying the Bible. Pray to God to help you as your read. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes to understand God’s Word and helps us apply it to our lives. Yes, there will be things we may not understand. God is God and we are not and our human mind cannot comprehend the full power of God. When you get stuck, pray, study more, research. Also, many times, I may read the passage several times, or even read it a month later and God has revealed something different to me to understand it more and apply it to your life. That is such a wonderful feeling when that happens Without the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we cannot fully grasp the depth of Scripture. Through prayer, we communicate with God, and through His Word, He speaks to us.
Challenge Questions to Consider:
- How regularly are you committing time to study the Bible, and how can you create a habit that allows you to grow in knowledge and joy from God’s Word?
- Are there areas in your life where you are not fully obeying God’s Word? What steps can you take to align your life more closely with His teachings?
- How can you better discern truth from falsehood in today’s world, and what role does the Bible play in this process?
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of Your Word. We praise You for the truth, joy, and guidance that we find in Scripture. Lord, we ask that You would give us a hunger for Your Word, that we may study it daily and apply its teachings in our lives. Open our hearts to understand the deep truths of the Bible and transform us by the renewing of our minds. Help us to live in obedience to You and be discerning in a world full of falsehoods. May Your Word continue to guide us, bring us joy, and lead us closer to You each day.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
