Fear is a universal human emotion that can grip us in various situations and circumstances. It is a natural response to threats or dangers, but it can also paralyze us and hinder our ability to live fully and freely. As Christians, we are called to trust in God and lean on Him in times of fear and uncertainty. The Bible offers guidance on how to deal with fear in a way that aligns with our faith and draws us closer to God.
1. Trust in God’s Promises: One of the most prominent themes in the Bible is the assurance of God’s presence and protection. Throughout the scriptures, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness and His promises to never leave us nor forsake us. When we feel afraid, we can turn to these promises as a source of comfort and strength. Psalm 56:3 says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” By anchoring our faith in God’s promises, we can find the courage to face our fears with confidence.
2. Pray for Peace and Strength: In times of fear, prayer is a powerful tool that can help us find peace and strength in God. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Prayer allows us to cast our fears and anxieties on God and seek His peace that surpasses all understanding.
3. Meditate on Scripture: The Word of God is a powerful weapon against fear and doubt. By meditating on scripture and filling our minds with God’s truth, we can combat negative thoughts and fears. Psalm 27:1 reminds us, “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” By immersing ourselves in God’s Word, we can find strength and courage to face our fears head-on. We use prayer to speak to God….When we read God’s Word, He is speaking to us. Always remember this!
4. Seek Support from Christian Community: As believers, we are not meant to face our fears alone. The body of Christ is a source of support and encouragement, and we can lean on our brothers and sisters in faith for strength and solidarity. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” Seeking support from our Christian community can help us navigate our fears and find comfort in knowing that we are not alone in our struggles.
5. Surrender Control to God: Fear often stems from a desire to control our circumstances and outcomes. However, as Christians, we are called to surrender our fears and worries to God, trusting in His sovereignty and perfect plan for our lives. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and He will make your paths straight.” By relinquishing control to God and submitting to His will, we can find freedom from fear and walk in faith and trust.
Conclusion
Dealing with fear in a Biblical way involves trusting in God’s promises, praying for peace and strength, meditating on scripture, seeking support from Christian community, and surrendering control to God. As we navigate the challenges and uncertainties of life, may we lean on God’s truth and find courage in His presence. Remember, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). I deal with fear as well….we all are human. I heard a stat once that 90% of things we worry about, never happens. Fear can use up a lot of energy for nothing. We need to take things one day at a time. I’m writing this blog two days after I just was laid off from my company after 10 years. I know that God is closing one door and will open up another.
